Associate Director of the Student Resource and Empowerment Center

Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

POSITION SUMMARY :
The Associate Director of the Student Resource and Empowerment Center (SREC) at Tidewater Community College will play a crucial role in spearheading student engagement and programming efforts for the SREC, as well as leading the college’s service and volunteer program. This position involves connecting students to community resources and developing partnerships that enhance student success, wellness, and retention. The Associate Director will work closely with the Director of the SREC to ensure the center’s initiatives align with the college’s mission and goals. This role requires strong leadership, innovative thinking, excellent communication skills, and a passion for helping students to foster a supportive and empowering environment.

In addition to programming, the Associate Director will coordinate with faculty, staff, and administrators to ensure a cohesive approach to student support. This position will involve regular collaboration with SREC case managers and campus partners to deliver comprehensive services that address the diverse needs of students. By building and maintaining strong relationships within the college and with external community organizations, the Associate Director will create a network of support that promotes student well-being and academic success. A significant aspect of this role is addressing students’ basic needs, such as financial assistance, food security, mental health, and housing support, to help them overcome challenges and focus on their educational goals.

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES :

  1. Lead the development and implementation of service and volunteer programs that engage students and support their personal, academic, and professional growth.
  2. Oversee programming efforts for the SREC, ensuring they are effective, inclusive, and aligned with the center’s mission.
  3. Establish and maintain partnerships with community organizations to provide resources and opportunities for students.
  4. Collaborate with SREC case managers and other campus partners to deliver comprehensive support services to students.
  5. Develop and implement strategies to increase student engagement and participation in SREC
  6. Provide leadership and guidance to SREC staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  7. Monitor and assess the effectiveness of SREC programs and services, using data to inform decision-making and program enhancements.
  8. Represent the SREC at campus and community events, promoting the center’s services and resources.
  9. Assist the Director of the SREC with strategic planning and reporting.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of personal development, leadership development, and student success theories and principles.
  • Demonstrated awareness of the concepts of student development services in the comprehensive community college and the philosophy of programs designed to empower traditionally underserved student communities.
  • Experience providing case management services in a social services, human services, or educational environment.
  • Experience in developing and implementing educational programs designed to support underserved students in overcoming barriers to academic success.
  • Knowledge of effective methods of developing, recruiting, and screening participants in programs designed to empower students to reach their highest personal, educational and career goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, collect, interpret, analyze, and manage data.
  • Proven ability to work with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in cross functional teams in a highly complex educational organizational setting.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills, including public speaking.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with a vast array of internal and external constituents ranging from students to administrative personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems on a short- and long-term basis.
  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
